Health-Conscious Sipping: 3 Reasons Why a Bloody Mary Beats the Average Cocktail

As Bloody Mary mix makers, we know that we are biased when we say that this tomato-based cocktail is one of the best libations that you can sip on. However, believe it or not, when we first started The Real Dill, we were barely Bloody Mary drinkers ourselves, and we certainly had no intention of creating a Bloody Mary recipe. To be honest, we actually consider our Bloody Mary Mix a happy accident that became our best selling product.

Our pickling process results in a delicious and refreshing cucumber-infused water, which, in the early days of The Real Dill, we were dumping down the drain. The overwhelming smell of fresh cucumbers made us feel guilty every time we threw the fragrant liquid away. Since “waste not, want not” is a proverb that we take to heart, we decided that the days of tossing this byproduct were over. Instead of letting this liquid go to waste, we began experimenting with a Bloody Mary recipe that highlighted this cucumber-infused water as the star ingredient. What we did not know at the time is that people would eventually recognize us for our Bloody Mary Mix more than our pickles, causing us to joke that we are no longer just a pickle company, but a Bloody Mary company with a pickle problem!

Cucumber infused water, a byproduct of our pickling process, is the star ingredient in our now famed Bloody Mary Mix. Paired with generous amounts of horseradish, dill, garlic, and habaneros, we bottled the essence of your backyard garden, shattering the stigma that freshness can’t come in a jar. Unlike most mixes, ours only contains ten simple, high-quality ingredients bursting with bold, rich flavors. Bright, vivacious, and spirited, we set a new standard for what Bloody Marys can and should be.

While we eventually became Bloody Mary drinkers because Bloody Marys are now engrained in our company's fabric, here are three main reasons why this powerfully bold drink has stolen our hearts.

Bloody Marys' magic hangover curing powers.

If you look up "hangover cure" on the internet, you will find that following up a long night of drinking with more drinking is, well, a bad idea for overcoming your hangover. However, a boozy brunch can certainly and temporarily provide some relief. (Plus, who does not love a boozy brunch?) When you need a hair of the dog to save yourself from a long night of partying, there is no better choice than a Bloody Mary.

Nutrient rich tomatoes are to thank for a Bloody Mary's ability to wash away a nasty hangover, even if it is only a temporary fix. While there is no evidence that they actually eliminate a hangover, tomatoes have the vitamins and minerals that help revive your body. Tomatoes are made up of electrolytes, sodium, potassium, Vitamin C (a powerful antioxidant), and tons of other vitamins. Most importantly, tomatoes have Vitamin B6, which is one of the few substances known to reduce hangover effects and symptoms.

Furthermore, Bloody Marys have less sugar than other brunch drinks, such as mimosas. Like alcohol, sugar causes dehydration and is processed through the liver. Sugary drinks also lead to a rapid spike in blood sugar, which can eventually cause a headache and a hangover. So next time you head to bottomless brunch, especially after a long night of drinking, you might want to consider the Bloody Mary bar over the mimosas!

Bloody Marys are actually healthy cocktails.

If you are serious about curing your hangover and want to sip on one of the very few healthy cocktails on the menu, we highly recommend drinking a virgin Bloody Mary. They still taste amazing and have more health benefits than the boozy version, albeit, they may not be as fun without the vodka. In addition to electrolytes, sodium, potassium, and Vitamin C, tomatoes also contain lycopene, which is high in antioxidants. Lycopene helps to combat the toxins in the liver (like the toxins that you consumed while drinking the night before.) Lycopene also reduces inflammation and stimulates brain growth.

Besides for the vitamins and minerals found in the tomato base of a Bloody Mary, we love this vegetal drink because it is one of the few low calorie cocktails out there. If you are using The Real Dill Bloody Mary Mix, it is made with all natural ingredients that you can find in your pantry or garden. That means, no additives, preservatives, or chemicals. Not to mention, one serving of our vegan Bloody Mary Mix has 25 calories, 0 grams of fat, 0 cholesterol, 5 grams of carbs, and 2 grams of sugar (none of which are added.) You will rarely, if ever, find other healthy cocktails or low calorie cocktails with similar nutritional facts! Even mimosas are higher in calories and sugar than Bloody Marys. When you have a Bloody Mary, you can add your favorite booze without worrying about over-consuming too many empty calories, and you can splurge on some tasty food at brunch without feeling guilty. It is about balance, after all, right?

Bloody Marys are basically a meal.

In recent times, brunch spots all over the country have been competing with each other to create the most decked out Bloody Mary concoctions. Each iteration seems to be crazier than the last. Gone are the days of a simple wooden skewer of green olives, a lemon or lime wedge, a pickle, and a celery stalk. After all, if your Bloody Mary doesn't have a meal stacked on top, how will it be Instagram-worthy?

At this point, we have seen anything and everything ranging from conventional items such as celery, pickled vegetables, traditional pickles, olives, lemon and lime wedges, bacon, and gourmet cheeses, to unconventional, over the top garnishes such as lobster tails, shrimp, crab claws, chicken wings, fried chicken, cheeseburger sliders, grilled cheese, slices of pizza, towers of tatter tots, onion rings, jerky, and waffles. Now, essentially a meal in itself, the Bloody Mary has practically become an avenue for competitive food styling!

All jokes aside, we have to admit that we love Bloody Marys for the garnishes on top. Who does not love a built in snack, or at times a meal, with a delicious cocktail?

Bloody Marys are flavorful and hearty, and while they make for the perfect cocktail to sip on at brunch or to cure a stubborn hangover, they have gained an immense, cult-like following in the last several years. Today, Bloody Marys have transformed from a mid-morning hangover staple to a healthy cocktail that is for appropriate any time of the day and for any occasion.

At The Real Dill, we pride ourselves on making a Bloody Mary Mix that is 100% ready to drink as is. Here is our favorite, super simple recipe. Feel free to substitute the vodka for your favorite spirit (we love to use gin, tequila, and even whiskey.)
